Families Say Thank You

I guess we never want to need hospice care. As an ICU nurse practitioner, I am a huge advocate of palliative care and have sent many families home under hospice care, but had never had a personal experience with it. My mom, a widow, had experienced a number of serious health crises in the last few years, so when the diagnosis of advanced lung cancer came, she acknowledged enough was enough. She didn’t want therapies that had no chance to cure her and in fact would start making her feel worse sooner. I suggested we get enrolled in hospice right away, to have the services as we would need them.

We chose AseraCare, a decision for which I will be forever grateful. From the first day, we were embraced by professionalism and caring. The depth of the admission process was almost overwhelming but it’s because they provide so many services. We had the most wonderful primary nurse, who seemed to anticipate Mom’s progress and needs even before Mom did. The social worker was amazing at helping us travel the “business” of dying and helping support us through a very difficult time.

Through everything from a new mattress to medications, Mom was in less pain those last 3 months and as functional as was possible than she had been in a long time. What a blessing! She was able to stay home (next door to us) until the end, passing away with family nearby. As the primary caretaker, I absolutely could NOT have done this without their help. They were knowledgeable, caring, accessible and professional. I would recommend their services to anyone in need with the warmest regards, and I know my mom would say the same.
